CLEAN Seminar - Arnaud Philippe (Bristol University)

16/03/2023

The next CLEAN seminar will take place on Monday 27 March in distance at 4.30pm Italian time.

The presenter will be Arnaud Philippe  (Bristol University). The title of the paper is: "Exploring Inmates' Perceptions: Evidence from Survey in Czechia".

Abstract:

We conduct surveys to capture inmates' perceptions on five key dimensions: perceived risk of sanctions; trust, and generosity towards inmates or the general population; trust in institutions; risk aversion; and optimism about prisoners’ reintegration into society. Initially, we compare inmates' responses to those of the general population and students. We find that inmates tend to overestimate the risks of sanctions and have low trust in the judicial system. Contrary to popular belief, we do not observe any "criminal brotherhood" effect and find that prisoners are not particularly knowledgeable or impulsive. Next, we study how inmates' responses change over time by comparing individuals who are surveyed twice, one year apart. We find that inmates become more pessimistic about post-release outcomes, as compared to students. Furthermore, they do not become more knowledgeable or increase trust or generosity towards other inmates. Finally, we study which dimensions correlate with misbehavior in prison between wave 1 and wave 2. We find that a high perceived probability of arrest or sanction is associated with less misbehavior in prison. On the other hand, more impulsive inmates misbehave more frequently.
